2020 NEIU Distinguished Alumnus Honor
What a surprise and unexpected honor to hear from one of my alma maters–where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Chicago to have been named the Distinguished Alumnus of 2020.
‘The Northeastern Illinois University Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest alumni honor the University bestows. It recognizes a particular achievement of note,

a series of such achievements or a career of outstanding accomplishment. Since the award’s inception Northeastern has 
recognized alumni who have distinguished themselves as preeminent in their fields, excelling in their vocations and avocations.’
These are strange and unfortunate times. I am in self-quarantine in the Chihuahan desert. 
Most events in the country are being cancelled or postponed. It’s wise.
In lieu of attending a gala (which is postponed at this time) I will be accepting with deep appreciation via video.
And I am very honored and delighted to be giving the forthcoming commencement speech–via internet. 
My deepest appreciation to the nomination committee and all those at NEIU who were in support.

Gracias, Grace–I may have jumped that gun since it may not have gone to press yet. But with the pandemic all ceremonies, as are university classes, have gone remote. So, no trip home to Chicago for festivities. Nevertheless, I am honored to have been nominated and (I was told) enthusiastically and unanimously selected for what appears to be the university’s highest honor. My book, MASSACRE OF THE DREAMERS, now in a new 20th anniversary edition has traveled a long way. Stay well, keep up the beautiful work yourself! abrazos.
